Skills At The Quarry!

14 01 2008

January 14th, 2008 ~

Well.. it was another fine day at Morrison’s Quarry yesterday. The sun was shining, and we headed out for a dive. Steve, JJ, and I went for an early dip! Due to our warm spell last week, the ice had thinned out, and we were actually able to enter without the chainsaw. We entered on the second beach area, beside the stairs, tied off our line, and down we went.

We did our valve drills and air shares, and decided to run some line down to the car. The car sits at about 118′, but we ran the line to 88′, and could see it just fine. Steve had the video camera rolling too, so I didn’t bother bringing my little camera. We headed back up, and over to the plane, at 25′, and worked on some more skills. I was backfinning away, while Steve and JJ did some bottle rotations and handing off bottles. I started to get a bit of a chill, so they came back to the entrance, let me go, then the fellas went back for more skills.

Bottom Time (for me): 40 mins.
Max. Depth. ~ 88′
Water Temp. ~ 38 at the plane, 39 at the car
Vis. ~ 40′ ish

After watching the video, and Steve telling me… I noticed that my trim was a bit off today. I’m not sure if it had something to do with the fact that I was tired, but I’m going to have to smack myself in de butt!

Until next week!

First Dive Of The Year!

5 01 2008

January 5th, 2008 ~Well, we didn’t get to dive on January 1st, due to the snow storm we had, so we had to wait until the weekend! Steve, Jeremy, Kevin, and I went up to the Quarry for some skills!

Steve and I arrived first, and Steve had some shovelling to do!

I would have helped, but we only had the one shovel…

We guessed at the depth, and Steve began to cut away…

While Steve was cutting, I decided to be a silly pants and shovel some letters in the snow. It was a bit slushy at that spot, so I was very careful!

Well.. our guess was a little off, we were just a little bit deep, so we ended up cutting a bit of a runway…

A couple of other friends showed up, and were gearing up as we descended…

You can see my fancy letters from in the water!

Kevin and Jeremy paired up for some skills…

(forgive the blurry pics…)

Ok… kinda funny, but Jeremy also decided to shoot a lift bag…

A little blurry, but still a cool pic… Kevin, chillin’

Kevin, Jeremy, and Steve, making their way back to the truck and van…

Jeremy and Kevin gearing down…

OO.. and me…

Steve S and Blake…

Kevin said that he had seen a spot at the edge of the ice, that the bubbles were escaping. We went gallovanting in the deep snow, and found it!

Bottom Time ~ 33 mins.
Water Temp. ~ 38
Max. Depth ~ 22′
Vis. ~ 50′

We did valve drills, inflator drills, gas switches, and air shares. When I donated my reg to Steve, it took me a second to realize that I also needed air.. as I didn’t put my back up in my mouth right away… I shook my head at myself, stuck my reg in my mouth, and because my lips were a bit frozen, I tasted a bit of the quarry…

Silly ass… Ahh well.. that’s why we do the skills…ding dong ding dong…

The vis was excellent, and we had fun.

After packing up and chatting a little, we all headed for the buffet, Buffet Des Continents!

Mmmm…. yummy! Darn special pants…
