Beneath The Sea ~ 2009

4 04 2009

March 27th – 29th, 2009 ~

Here we are again. Another trip to the mighty New Joisey, for Beneath The Sea. I woke at the unearthly hour of 3:30 am, and headed down to Rockport to meet the gang. Once there, we piled into James’ truck, and Tony followed behind with the booth.

Once over the border, we stopped at Cracker Barrel for breakfast. In the parking lot, we saw a truck with a very interesting passenger…

or four…

We ate,  and we headed out on our way… Not without me purchasing a crazy, quacking Easter duck from the store. James wouldn’t let me play with it in the car. 😀
We arrived at the Meadowlands at about 2:30 pm, and started unloading the trailer.

By the time the show started, we were just about finished setting up.

A few of us headed over to the Tech Party, after the show, for some grub, a couple of bevvies, and some great company. We had an awesome night. Thanks to Corey and Joel for keeping us entertained. I’ve used the word of the day a few times since that night.

Jen…

Saturday was another good day at the show. We had alot of friends stop by for information and some friendly banter. We even went for lunch with George and Christine, which was a blast.  It was also great to meet many people that I’ve corresponded with online, in person.

Becky,  David and I…

Yasuko…

We even saw Alessandra there, who we had met in Mexico, last November…

Saturday evening, Jen B. and I went out for dinner with the wonderful folks at DUI, and had a most excellent time! I still can’t believe I ate alligator! I loved listening to diving stories, and being in the company of wonderful people. It was great to finally catch up with you, Dave!!

In our quest to find the restaurant, we passed by the New Jersey Devil’s arena.

Edit: Ok.. it turns out they were  playing against Carolina, but the Sens were definitely in town. I stood in front of their tour bus, while people were taking pictures and getting autographs a bit earlier. 😉

After dinner, we headed back to one of the hotels, where we sat and listened to the wisdom of some of diving’s pioneers. It was incredible to be in the same room as some of the people that have helped to shape the sport that we know and love, and to hear the stories of their experiences.  I could write an entire “Bloggy Post” about that alone. I also had the opportunity to meet Zale Parry, during the show, which was also a treat.

Sunday, another great day, and we met even more people, saw some great booths, and had alot of fun. Susan Long, from DUI, did our prize draws for us as well!

Chris and Sarah…

Ron and Quintin…

After the show, we tore down the booth, packed it up, and headed out once again. We had a bit of fun while packing up..

On the way back, we ran into a freak rain and lightening storm, which lit up the entire sky, and caused alot of accidents on the freeway. There were some scary looking ones.

We sang many songs to keep James awake in the truck. I’m not sure if he was happy about that or not…lol… We crossed the border, somewhere near 3 am, and headed back to Rockport. I picked up my car, and made the trip back to Ottawa. I “landed” at 5am, and it didn’t take long for my head to hit the pillow.

Despite the long days and sore feet, Beneath The Sea was definitely worth the trip once again. I was able to meet up with friends from the past and present, and to learn about how parts of our diving world were shaped.

Thanks to everyone that hung out with us and to Bob Sherwood, for some great insight, and in helping me get Alek’s book signed.

Jen and Bob…

Corey…

Becky and David…

What a wonderful weekend, and I can’t wait until next year!

David and James…

Friends, Feast, and Finning… Part 2

2 04 2009

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009 ~

We were up again, and headed off to the quarry. When we arrived, the hole from the day before was still open, so there was no need for a chainsaw today. I decided to leave the camera behind again, so that I could just relax and enjoy the dive. I had enough shots of everyone from the previous day’s adventures!

We got in, and ran our line to the boat line. Frankie had his camera going as well, so he did get some of the day’s footage. Steve, Jay, and I took turns scootering through the boat and giving each other “the moose.”

We had yet another excellent adventure under the ice, at the quarry. As much as I welcome the warmer water and air temperatures, I am really going to miss the fantastic winter visibility of the quarry. It doesn’t quite stay as clear in the summer months, but is still a great place to work on skills.

Bottom Time ~ 41 mins.
Max. Depth ~ 43′
Water Temp. ~ 40
Vis. ~ Great!

Once we got out, we saw that the ice on the beach was a little breakable. We got rid of our gear, and headed back in for an ice breaking party. We had alot of laughs and broke up alot of ice!

The beach, once we were finished with it…

Jay, peeking out of his fancy divemobile…

Jen…. unpacking… rofl..

Frankie…

Now that the ice is melting, we will be having many more adventures with our friends in the river! We’ll still be at the quarry until the water warms up, but when it does, we are river bound once again! w000t!!

Friends, Feast, and Finning… Part 1

1 04 2009

Saturday, March 21st, 2009 ~

On Friday night, a bunch of our friends came from as far west as St. Catherines and as far east as Quebec City. We were having another gathering of friends from afar, for some diving goodness!

Francois and Eric were the first to arrive, followed by Jen, then Jay. We were all hanging out in the dive garage, and helping Jen with her new scooter. After some catching up and nibbling on pizza, we hit the pillows.

Saturday morning, we were up bright and early to go to the quarry. The ice will probably be gone soon, so this weekend would be one of the last couple of ice dives of the season.

When we arrived, there were another three groups of people there to dive. It was a busy day for the watering hole, and there was a large opening above the plane too! We also met up with Jeremy.

We had brought our short body scooters to play with, so that Jen could try out her new toy! We didn’t all have them, so we took turns handing off scooters.

Jen…

Jay…

I handed mine off for a bit, so that I could take some shots, and it was even left to the plane for a bit…

Jay’s little scooter…

Steve, sending me the secret hand shake signal…

Jeremy…

Frankie…

Steve, mid barrel roll…

We had a heckuvalot of fun!

Bottom Time ~ 38 mins.
Max. Depth ~ 38′
Water Temp. ~ 40
Vis. ~ Great!

The weather was absolutely gorgeous, so a few of us decided to go for a second dive! I left the camera behind, so that I could play around with my scooter. Jen took some shots from the surface, and since there was a gaping hole above the plane, she got some shots of us below!

Jen also got a video clip with her camera…

We weren’t in for long, but it was fun to get back in!

Bottom Time ~ 21 mins.
Max. Depth ~ 57′
Water Temp ~ 40
Vis. ~ Great!

I think this one is the picture of the day… Jay got a little crabby…

We headed over to Jean Burger for a quick nibble, and then headed back to our place.

We tinkered with gear for a while, then I uploaded the pictures from the day’s adventures. Then it was time for BBQ! Jen had brought up the most succulent sirloin steaks, fresh from the butcher, and fresh bacon to wrap around them. Holy smokes, we were eating like kings and queens tonight! While I played around with the pictures, Jen and Steve got the food together. We had filet mignon, baked potatoes, and.. well.. we forgot the veggies, but we had other add ons! Kevin and Jenn E. also joined us for dinner.

After filling our bellies, it was time to sit back, relax, and watch the “WKPP Push For The Connection” DVD. What a way to wind down a most excellent day of diving goodness and fun with friends!

Stay tuned for Part 2!

Busy Diving Weekend ~ Part Two ~ Free Divers

22 03 2009

Sunday, March 15th, 2009 ~

This weekend, a bunch of free divers from Quebec and Toronto came up to the quarry for  some free diving, under the ice.

We geared up, as they dressed and prepared. We had both still and video cameras, in order to capture the event. Once we got to the plane, I took a few shots to get the lighting right, and to prepare for the first divers to come down.

They had three holes cut, direct lines to the surface, and lines connecting the holes. Mike had prearranged to get a “mermaid” shot, of one of the divers, sitting on a rock, by the plane.

I was able to get a couple of shots off from the side…

Here is the shot that Mike took, while I was shooting from the side.

Every couple of minutes, another diver would make their way down to the plane, which sits at about 25′, and there were even a few that would go down to the sub, at about 65′.

There were over a dozen divers coming down, saying hello, taking pictures, and even waving hello from inside of the plane.

Watching this “Cirque Du Soleil” under water was truly a mesmerizing thing to witness. The gracefulness and beauty of it all was just awe inspiring.

I’m really not sure that I would ever even consider doing what these people do, but I’m just amazed and happy to have been a spectator, and to have been able to catch some shots of them to share.

A Busy Diving Weekend ~ Part One

16 03 2009

Friday, March 13th, 2009 ~

Steve had a day off, so we decided to do what? Oh.. yeah.. go diving…  Jeremy was also off, so he met us up at the quarry for a skills dive. When we got up there, the gate was locked, so we went around to the back entrance, and around to the parking lot.

We went over to inspect the hole, and the entire quarry was frozen over again. We hadn’t expected it to be, as it was breaking up the previous weekend. However, it wasn’t very difficult to break up the entry hole.

We geared up, got in, and off we went to the plane. Our goal of this dive was to work on skills.. valve drills, a couple of failures, tying in to another main line, and team formation. Steve was #1, Jeremy was #2, and I was #3.

After tying in to the main line, running to the boat, Steve had a primary light failure. We regrouped, and headed “out.” We cut the drill, then went on to the plane, to do our valve drills.

We did some finning as well, swam around a bit, then headed back in. It was really nice having the quarry to ourselves, on such a gorgeous day!

Bottom Time ~ 46 mins.
Max. Depth ~ 41′
Water Temp. ~ 39
Vis. ~ Great!

After our dive, we headed to the shop for fills, and to visit our good buddy Leigh. He’s been way too busy lately, and it was great to see him!

What a great way to spend a Friday!

Saturday, March 14th, 2009 ~

Today was the day… it was time to head back down to the RIVER!! Although it was still completely frozen over east of Rockport, it was magically open right where we wanted to dive. It was as if the river was calling for us, missing us over the winter months… Um.. ok…

Anyway, Steve and I met Kevin and Jeremy at Jeff’s dock, and went in for a splash. The UW camera stayed at home today, as the river is still only just above the freezing point, and I wanted to be prepared for anything.

The entry point did have some ice around it, but it was wide open just off of it. Jeff had the bubbler going as well, which was great.

Kevin and Jeremy splashed in first, followed by Steve and I. We did not head over to the Kinghorn, but swam west of the dock instead, where there are remnants of a wreck. We encountered a bunch of dormant bass, as well as sleeping crayfish. We swam about 20 minutes out, then made our way back in. As we tied our stage bottles in to the gear line, we saw Kevin and Jeremy behind us. They had gone the other way.

I had stayed pretty warm throughout the dive, although I seemed to have a small leak in my drysuit.

Bottom Time ~ 35 mins.
Max. Depth ~ 64′
Water Temp. ~ 33
Vis. ~ 30′ out, 50′ up

Although the water was hardly above the freezing point, it felt so good to be back in the river!

Despite the warmer air temperatures, Jeremy’s reg still seemed to have a nice frost to it…

Ahhhh… Spring is coming!!

Tomorrow, we’re headed back to the quarry to watch the free divers!
