April Showers…and Snow?

22 04 2011

Saturday, April 16th, 2011 ~

A very grey morning, and we packed and readied ourselves for some quarry diving. When we arrived, we were not surprised to see the quarry completely free of ice. There was still some ice coverage last weekend, but with some wonderful spring temperatures, we had expected a full melt!

It had started to rain on our drive up, but it could have been much worse. 🙂

Today was going to be a skills day. Steve and I paired up, as did Frankie and Eric V. We did our gear checks, ducked down, bubble check, stretch out, then off to the plane.

Steve and I each did our Valve Drills, then S Drills, then the four of us headed down to the sub, where we had planned on doing a timed ascent. Steve blew the bag, and up we went. Well.. let’s just say it’s been a little while since we’ve done ascent drills, and I know what I need to work on! We surfaced, debriefed, then down we went, to the plane.

We goofed around a little, then made our way back in. It wasn’t a long dive, but it was good to get back at the skills.

Bottom Time ~ 29 mins.
Max. Depth ~ 55′
Water Temp. ~ 41
Vis. ~ Starting to turn a little hazy

Of course, we had to make our traditional trip to Jean Burger!

While sitting in Jean Burger, we noticed that the rain had turned to snow, and the size of the snowdrops increased from little bitty snowflakes, to giant Kleenex-sized ones! It’s April, for crying out loud!!!

 More Diving Goodness to follow!!
