The Kinghorn!

30 04 2009

Sunday, April 19th, 2009 ~

Steve and I headed down to Rockport, to meet Kevin, James, and Jeremy for  a trip out to the Kinghorn. We planned on taking the short bodies, and take a short jaunt out to the wreck. We knew the water was hovering around 40, so we didn’t plan on a long dive. Kevin brought an extra Gavin for James.

When we got to the wreck, we did a few passes, checked out the inside, then reconvened to head back. Steve, James, and I were on the starboard side, when Steve had a bit of a freeflow. James decided to head off with the other two, while Steve took care of it, and I stood by.

When we got back to 40′, we hovered for a while, and we discovered that James had a bit of an issue with his scooter… it wanted to keep going..lol.. Kevin helped him to deal with it, and we made our way back in. There were a ton of crayfish milling about on this dive as well. They were big suckers too!

We got out and debriefed, with a few laughs and tales, and Kevin checked out his scooter.

I even found a little ring on the way in…

Bottom Time ~ 33 mins.
Max. Depth ~ 86′
Water Temp. ~ 40
Vis. ~ 30′

We packed up, got changed, then headed over to the BoatHouse for some grub!

It’s great to be back in the river!!!

Good Friday At The Quarry

23 04 2009

Friday, April 10th, 2009 ~

After lounging around in the morning, we finally packed the van and headed out to the quarry. Steve was going to work on bottle rotations, and I was going to work on stowing a stage reg. I could stand to do it a bit quicker.

We got there, and there were a few others there, getting back in the water, after a winter hiatus. We also saw a couple of other friends that we knew as well. The quarry was wide open and ready for action!

Steve and I got in, did our pre-dive checks, and off we went to the plane. I left the camera behind again, so we could concentrate on skills. We got to the plane, and Steve started doing his bottle rotations. I watched him, then just started deploying and stowing my stage reg. He then passed me another bottle, for me to clip on. I tinkered with that for a while, and of course, I double clipped it on the hip D ring.. pft.. Start over…

I am definitely going to have to do some more work with that, and maybe some exercises to strengthen my hand a bit.

Once we were half satisfied, we headed back in.

Bottom Time ~ 32 mins.
Max. Depth ~ 23′
Water Temp. ~ 40
Vis. ~ 50′ Starting to get less crisp

Eric and Greg were waiting for us, and we sat about with them for a bit. We even had some fun with Eric’s Fusion suit…

We decided to get back in, and do some other skills. Eric joined us for this dive. We didn’t go to the plane, but hung around the deco rock, working on finning techniques and valve drills. Steve swam off a bit, then had an OOG (yes, it was a drill…lol). I rushed to him, donated my stage reg, went to my back up, then deployed my long hose for him, putting me back on the stage reg. All was well in the land of donation. We cut the drill, and carried on. We played with some rocks, then came back in… Ok.. I was the one playing with rocks…

Bottom Time ~ 30 mins.
Max. Depth ~ 17′
Water Temp. ~ 40
Vis. ~ 50′

Another excellent day in the water!

Happy Easter!

To The Rothesay

12 04 2009

Sunday, April 5th, 2009 ~

Steve and I headed down to Prescott yesterday,  and did a little wreck from shore, called the Rothesay. It’s been quite a while since we’ve done this wreck, and it was good to get back to it.

This wreck went down from a collison, and was eventually used as target practice, and has been the victim of dynamite in the past. The boilers are still intact, and there are some neat things to see on this wreck, despite being pretty “banged up.” There is also a really neat swim through, and a few resident fish to visit with. It sits in about 28′ of water, so is often a pretty busy site during the summer months.

The jug was down,  so we opted to swim out to 12′, then drift onto the line, which worked out great. We ended up drifting onto it, right in front of the wreck. We did a couple of turns, took pics by the boilers, as well as in the little swim throughs, then headed back.

We didn’t stay out for long, but we had a nice, relaxing dive. The visibility wasn’t that great either, as there had been quite a bit of rain during the week. Still fun!

Bottom Time ~ 32 mins.

Max. Depth ~ 27′

Water Temp. ~ 40

Visibility ~ 20′ and milky

Entry point…

Upon returning home, it seems that my first trip to the river with the camera was unsuccessful. Apparently, I need to learn how to focus properly in low visibility. Oh well.. learning curve! 🙂

2008 ~ The Year In Review

2 01 2009

It has been a most excellent year for diving and training. As usual, we started the year off with friends at the quarry, working on skills, skills, skills. In the winter, our usual place to eat is Jean Burger. Ok, it’s not going to win any awards as far as the Healthiest Food On Earth, but that poutine sure is yummy after a cold, wintery dive.

This year also brought me the She-P. Thanks to Heleen and Sander, in the Netherlands, myself and hundreds of others were now able to dive with a bit more comfort. With a bit of trial and error, and an “accident” or two, this device made my life a lot easier. Heleen and Sander… you are the best! Thank you!!!

In March, Steve and I made the trip down to New Jersey, for Beneath The Sea, with Northern Tech Diver. We were able to put a lot of faces to names, and build wonderful friendships. I have to say that the display kicked butt, and even won an award.

The river opened up in the second week in April, and we were happy for the change in scenery. We do love the quarry, but it’s nice to be back in the River!

There was also Leigh’s surprise birthday party, in which we had to get him to the restaurant without him being on to us. I think he had a slight idea, as our routine changed a bit. That was another pretty fun day.

Leigh… after his birthday party…

I spent a lot of time this year, working on skills and preparing for the courses I was taking. I also sat in on a few DIR~F classes, to reabsorb information. It’s a bit different when you’re not actually sitting in the class, like a deer in headlights… What a valuable thing to be able to do. We scheduled Thursday night skills dives at the Quarry as well.

I went to my high school reunion in May, and met up with so many friends that I hadn’t seen in a lifetime. That weekend turned out to be one of the best weekends ever, as it was also packed with diving goodness, aside from the reunion festivities. I did the Tiller with Jay, Humber with David B. and Chris M., and the Sligo with the DIS crew.

At the end of May, I was blessed with PVC goodness. Steve and I picked up a 35ah PVC Gavin for me. I learned some scooter skills and practiced, and was finally able to join in on some of the river scooter dives.

We spent some time in Kingston, playing around with skills at the quarry, looking for wrecks, scootering one from shore, as well as charters with the gang.

August brought so many friends from Zen Diving, for a weekend of diving and socializing fun. It was really amazing to meet so many absolutely wonderful people. Every single one of them. We’ve made some really great friendships, and look forward to seeing them again next August!

We also had our friend Harvey come for a visit. We had been waiting to dive with him for a couple of years, and the time had finally come for him to come and stay with us. Our friend Francois was also a regular visitor at our house!

The time had finally come to do Tech 1. I had dived my fool butt off, put a lot of time into skills, and it seemed to pay off. My buddies Jacob and Dmitri were amazing, and I couldn’t have asked for a better team.

This year also brought the Northeast Underwater Explorers, and my first Jodrey dive. We met even more amazing people, and look forward to many more dives and visits with them. They amazed us with that darn sunlight they brought with them.

Then there was October, when Steve and I were married, and we headed down to Mexico for Cave 1. The first few days were on our own, and our friends came down to join us later on, for the course. What an absolutely amazing experience. They say caves are addictive… that’s an understatement…

There were a couple more trips to the Jodrey, and we had fun everywhere we went.

I think Steve took this one…

Then there was December… It seemed to come too quickly. The cold air was moving in, and our days in the river were getting fewer, until the spring. Our last river dive of the year was a scooter dive in Morrisburg…

Santa (read Steve) had also brought me a lens, so that I could start taking pictures with my “new to me” camera (thanks Tom and Vlada!!!) in the quarry.

What an absolutely fantastic year of diving with all of our regular dive buddies, and those that travelled so far to hang out with us. I really value the friendships that we were able to build throughout the year ~ New friends, and stronger relationships with friends we already had.

We even learned that bringing scooters up to a hotel room to charge was a pretty amusing ordeal as well, right Jay?

Thanks to all of our friends, for helping to make 2008 such a great year.

Cheers to 2009!! J

Last Charter Of The Season

26 11 2008

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008 ~

I had planned a couple of charters for us and some friends, to head to the Jodrey one last time this year. We suited up in Jeff’s shop, as the air temperature was a balmy -13 with the wind chill ~ a tad bid chillier than our recent dives in Mexico.

We loaded up the boat and we were off to the Jodrey. Steve, Jay, and Oren were a team, and I was diving with Warren. We dropped down the wall, and reached the crow’s nest. Wow… the vis. was wicked! I’ve only done this wreck a few times, but this was a treat! We noticed that someone had run some kind of line across the wreck. It wasn’t exactly in the best of places, so we had to make sure we didn’t get caught in it. We swam around the bow, checking out where Steve and the boys had visited, and Warren got some great shots!

During deco, we saw more fish than we normally see, and the water temp was pretty tolerable, even though the air was frosty!

We had a most excellent dive!

Run Time ~ 76 mins.
Max. Depth ~ 170′
Water Temp. ~ 48
Vis. ~ Wicked!

Surface shots… We all looked like Stay Puff Marshmellow people, in our masses of winter undies!

The air was a bit chilly, but the water was warmer, and being amongst friends on such a great dive, was a great way to spend the day!

It was actually nice to see so many stars in the sky. Thanks for the evening cruise, Jeff!
